Spooktacular Halloween

Let's begin this week with something spooktacular!

We were all dressing up today to celebrate Halloween, which is usually celebrated every 31 October. The PYP students, parents, and teachers were so enthusiastic about showing off their costumes at the Halloween fashion show. Fairies, vampires, pirates, and ghosts were some of the students' favorite costumes.

Meanwhile, the MYP and DP students were so busy solving Halloween-themed games. The event ended with a potluck party, where all students bring their favorite food and share them with their classmates.

Hope your Halloween is also as spooktacular as ours.

United Nations Day

Every 24th of October, United Nations Day is celebrated all over the world to commemorate the anniversary of the official creation of the United Nations. National costumes, flags, speeches, slogans, and other activities are organized to mark the day and promote the idea of diversity and unity.

This morning, to celebrate UN Day, the YIS community held some activities at the YIS campus. Parents, students, teachers, and staff were wearing international costumes from different countries. There were also some music and dance performances by students and teachers, followed by a debate related to sustainable development goals, a quiz on partnership, unity, and peace; and UN Day theme drawings.

YIS Students Participating in the DBL Students Athletic Championships

Participation in sports competitions can increase self-confidence and maintain student health. Last year, some of our PYP students took part in the Hot Sprint Contest at the Sleman Regency.

This year, we participated in the Student Athletics Championships held by Persatuan Atletik Seluruh Indonesia (PASI) and Developmental Basketball League (DBL) Indonesia. Our MYP students participated in 80 meters sprint race, while our PYP students participated in Kids Athletic Contest. We are so proud to see their confidence and their fighting spirits!

Research Writing Workshop for Grade 5 and 6 Students

Inquiry-based learning is an approach to learning that emphasizes the student's role in the learning process. Rather than the teacher telling students what they need to know, students are encouraged to explore the material, ask questions, and share ideas. Thus, students are encouraged to share through research writing and presentation. However, writing itself can be a difficult skill to learn and master.

Last week, PYP Grade 5 and 6 students attended a research writing workshop with Ibu Artika, our MYP and DP Science teacher. They had an experiment on a microscopic living thing, yeast, learning that tiny living thing is also breathing. They then wrote down their investigation through a report.

It is hoped that this opportunity can help PYP students to have a smooth transition to the MYP. As Alexander Graham Bell once said, "Before anything else, preparation is the key to success."

Secondary Students joining Kapanewon Mlati Cultural Festival

In order to preserve the Javanese culture, the Kapanewon Mlati Government held the Kapanewon Mlati Cultural Festival which was held on the 13th of October 2022.

YIS Middle Years Programme students and Diploma students got the chance to join some of the activities held at the event, such as Sesorah (Javanese Speech) Competition, Geguritan (Poetry Reading) Competition, Cultural Workshop, and Storytelling Competition in Javanese. It is important to always teach our students to not forget who they are and where they come from.

Visiting the Indonesian Army Base

Getting to know the Indonesian Army helps children learn how they protect the security of our country – that means they keep us safe.

Yesterday, some of YIS students got an amazing opportunity to ride on the Indonesian famous armour, Anoa! The Anoa is a 6x6 armoured personnel carrier developed by PT Pindad of Indonesia. The vehicle is named after the Anoa, which is a type of buffalo indigenous to Indonesia.

We were invited by Batalyon Infanteri Mekanis 403/Wirasada Pratista, an Army Base in Yogyakarta, to get to know what an army is and what they do. Eventually, we could ride on the Army vehicle around the base. This could be the coolest learning experience ever!
